After 20 years, Minnesota still wonders, Where's Jacob?

On Oct. 22, 1989, Jacob Wetterling vanished - kidnapped in rural St. Joseph, Minn. Twenty years later, his disappearance endures as one of the state's greatest criminal mysteries. But his family has never given up hope that, one day, he will come home.

Eleven-year-old Jacob Wetterling liked to play hockey, basketball, soccer and football. He loved to go fishing. He liked to tell jokes. He was happy in school. He was learning to play the trombone. He loved dogs. He wanted to be a veterinarian when he grew up.

And then he was gone.

On Oct. 22, 1989, a masked gunman stepped out of the woods on a rural road in St. Joseph, just west of St. Cloud, and took Jacob. He hasn't been seen since.

For months, the case attracted national attention and dominated headlines. How in the world, people wondered, could something like that happen in small-town America?

Twenty years later, the question remains.

"We don't know what happened," Patty Wetterling says. "It's just a whole bunch of 'we don't knows.' There's no such word as 'closure.' Answers. We need answers."

The Wetterlings — parents Jerry and Patty, along with siblings Carmen, Amy and Trevor — have never wavered in their belief and hope that Jacob is still alive.

"I think that if he was not, we would have found him," Carmen says.

Officials continue to receive tips — the most recent just a few weeks ago — and the Wetterlings still get calls at their home and at work.

A young man from Kentucky called Jerry Wetterling's chiropractic office two years ago and said he was "Jacob Edwin Wetterling"; Jacob's middle name is Erwin. The man had been surfing the Internet and had found Jacob's picture on the National Center for Missing
